How to mention someone in a chat

Updated by Customer Support

Goal

Bring a teammate into a chat and let them know you need them, by typing @ and their name.

Quick path

  1. In the chat, type @ in the message box.

  2. Start typing the person's name and pick them from the list. If they're not in the chat yet, click Add to chat, then choose Editor or Viewer access.

  3. Finish your message and send it. They get a notification.

This is the easiest way to add someone from your workspace to a chat and mention them at the same time.

The one thing to know first

Adding someone to a chat from the @ list gives them the whole chat, including everything said before they joined. If there's anything in the chat they shouldn't see, start a new chat instead.

Step-by-step

  1. Type @ in the message box. A list opens with people in your workspace first, then AI models and bots. Keep typing to narrow it down.

  2. Pick the person. Their name shows up in your message as a mention. You have to pick them from the list: typing a name as plain text, even after @, doesn't notify anyone.

  3. If they're not in the chat yet, add them. Click Add to chat, then choose whether they join as an Editor (can prompt bots) or a Viewer (can read only). Only the chat's owner can add people this way.

  4. Send your message. What happens next depends on who you picked:

    You mention

    What happens

    Someone already in the chat

They get a notification that you mentioned them.

Someone in your workspace you just added

They get a notification and can join the chat from there with the access you chose.

    An AI model or bot

Your message goes to that model or bot. See How to use more than one AI in the same chat.

Someone who isn't on your team

The @ list only shows people in your workspace. To bring in someone from outside it, like a colleague at another school, share the chat with them by email instead. They'll need a BoodleBox account. See How to share a chat with someone.

Mentions in a Box

In a Box, you can only mention people who are already in the Box. Everyone in a Box can open every chat in it, so mentioning a Box member just sends them a notification. To bring in someone new, add them to the Box first. See How to share a Box and add people.

Verify it's working

  • The person's name appears as a mention in your sent message.

  • If you added them, they now appear under People with access in the chat's Share window, with the access you chose.

Still stuck?

  • The person isn't in the @ list. In a regular chat, they're not in your workspace, so share the chat with them by email instead. In a Box, they're not in the Box yet, so add them to the Box first.

  • They say they didn't get a notification. Check that you picked their name from the list rather than typing it out. See How notifications work.
