Using BoodleBox with a keyboard

Goal

Use BoodleBox with the keyboard alone.

Quick path

  1. Press Tab once on any page. The first stops are two skip links: Skip to page navigation and Skip to site navigation. Press Enter on one to jump there.

  2. Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between controls, and Enter or Space to use them.

Moving around

  • Skip links. "Skip to page navigation" jumps to the sections of the page you're on. "Skip to site navigation" jumps to the main navigation.

  • After you navigate, focus moves to the new page, so you don't have to tab back through the sidebar.

  • A focus ring shows which control is active. It's designed to be visible in light and dark mode.

The sidebar

  • Folders open and close with Enter. Tab skips the chats inside a closed folder, so you only move through what you can see.

  • Resize the sidebar by tabbing to the divider between the sidebar and the page, then pressing the Left and Right arrow keys. Home and End jump to the narrowest and widest sizes.

  • Row actions such as a chat's menu stay in the tab order even though they only appear on hover for mouse users.

  1. Press Enter or Space on a menu button. Focus moves to the first item.

  2. Use the Up and Down arrow keys to move, and Enter to choose.

  3. Press Escape to close the menu. Focus returns to the button that opened it.

Dialogs

  • When a dialog opens, focus moves into it and stays there until you close it.

  • Press Escape to close it. Focus returns to the control that opened it.

Chatting

  • Type in the message box and press Enter to send. Press Shift+Enter for a new line.

  • Type @ to mention a bot, / to use a skill, or -- to write a comment the bot won't reply to. The pickers work from the keyboard: use the arrow keys to highlight an option and Enter to choose it.

  • In comment mode, the bot picker, skills and attach buttons are still reachable with Tab. They explain that they're not available in comment mode.

  • Message actions, such as copy, appear when a message has keyboard focus.

Verify it's working

  • You can see where focus is as you move around.

  • Escape closes any menu or dialog and puts you back where you were.
