How to move a custom GPT or Gem into BoodleBox
Goal
Move a custom GPT or a Gemini Gem into BoodleBox as a bot, so the work you put into it keeps running after the original platform retires it.
Why now
Custom GPTs are scheduled to retire on December 11, 2026. Some workspaces have later dates, so check with your admin.
Gemini Gems start converting to Skills on November 17, 2026 for personal accounts. Google Workspace accounts follow in 2027.
For the full timeline, see Save the Bots.
Quick path
In ChatGPT or Gemini, open your bot's editor. Copy its instructions and download its knowledge files.
In BoodleBox, go to Bot Builder → Build Bot. On the Configure tab, paste the instructions into Bot Instructions and add the files under Knowledge.
Test it, then click Publish.
Before you start
Use the account that created the GPT or Gem. Only the creator can see its instructions.
Copy everything before you click "Migrate to plugin" in ChatGPT. That makes the GPT read-only.
You don't need your ChatGPT data export (the .zip). It holds your chat history, not your GPT's setup.
Actions and connected apps don't transfer. Note them down so you can ask about alternatives.
Step-by-step
Copy the instructions, word for word. In ChatGPT, open My GPTs, click the pencil icon to edit, and copy everything in Instructions on the Configure tab. In Gemini, open Gems, find your Gem under My Gems, click Edit, and copy its Instructions.
Download the knowledge files. In the same editor, scroll to Knowledge and download each file. Gemini may add a short code to file names, so rename them back if needed.
Write down the rest. Its name, conversation starters, and the model it ran on.
Build the bot in BoodleBox. Click the bot icon in the left sidebar, then Build Bot, and give it the same name. Switch to the Configure tab, paste the instructions into Bot Instructions, and add your files under Knowledge. See How to build a custom bot.
Test it. In Test Bot, ask two or three questions you know the answers to and compare them with what the original bot would say.
Publish and share. Click Publish. Your bot then works with any model in BoodleBox, not just one.
Good to know
Your bot only knows what's in its written setup. If you corrected it in past chats ("always use bullet points"), add those preferences to Bot Instructions.
Partway through a project? Before you move, ask your old bot to write a handoff summary of the chat, then paste it as the first message in a chat with your new BoodleBox bot. The Save the Bots page has a prompt you can copy.
Bots have a limit on knowledge files. See Supported file types and size limits.
Verify it's working
The bot shows in your model picker and answers your test questions the way the original did.
Ask it "What are your instructions and limitations?" and check that it describes the setup you pasted in.
