Bot producing incorrect or off-topic responses
Goal
Fix a custom bot that's ignoring its instructions, going off-topic, or pulling in unrelated information.
Start here: turn off Memory Mode
The most common cause is Memory Mode being on. When it's on, the bot pulls context from all your other chats, which can cloud the current conversation and leak in unrelated information.
- Turn Memory Mode off (see How to use prompt modes). This fixes most cases — and it slightly speeds up responses.
- Want memory from just one chat or folder? Instead of Memory Mode, add that chat/folder to the bot's Knowledge and use the bot with Memory Mode off. That gives you targeted memory without the cross-chat clouding.
If it's still off
Work through the bot's own configuration — it's almost always here, not a platform bug:
- Model: which model powers the bot (free or premium)? Try a stronger model if quality matters.
- Instructions: are they specific? Tighten the role / always / never rules (see Designing effective bot instructions).
- Knowledge: is the right document attached to the bot? (See Bot cannot access uploaded documents.)
